iOS 6 Tips and Hidden Features

iOS 6 has been out for more than an hour now. (Don’t get left behind.) Apple showcased many of the big-ticket features at its WWDC keynote back in June and, later, at the iPhone 5 unveiling. But there’s far more to iOS 6 than things like Passbook and Maps.

There are dozens of tweaks and additions that substantially enhance Apple’s mobile OS -- some obvious, and some hidden. Either way, we’ve saved you the trouble of searching for them.

Have the Whole World in Your Hands

Apple’s completely redesigned Maps app replaces Google Maps in iOS 6. The new app has nifty features like turn-by-turn directions, Fly Over and, because it uses vector-based images, 3-D image renderings of many destinations. One of the less helpful (but fun!) features is the ability to zoom out in Satellite mode to see the Earth as a glowing blue ball in space.

Simply pinch to zoom out, like you normally, and keep doing it until the map becomes a globe. You can even spin the world around. The view doesn’t show time zones, or where it’s day or night, or any other useful information, but now you’ve got a globe in the palm of your hand.

Nokia Mobile Phone Unlock & Hidden Feature codes

These codes will work on most Nokia Mobile Phones to activate/deactivate advanced hidden functions that you can’t change through the phone menu

One useful function that all Nokia’s I’ve owned have is “Cell Info Display” which can usually be found in the phones “Display settings” (eg: in a Nokia 1600) or “Phone Settings” (eg: in a Nokia 3315)

If your network supports it, when “Cell Info Display” is enabled, it will display the name of the base station your mobile is currently connected to on the screen eg: when i’m walking around the city it says “Sydney CBD” and when i’m at home it displays the name of my suburb.

Note:

To display “p” press “*” three times within one second, To display “w” press “*” four times within one second, To display “+” press twice “*” within less than a second

How to change the Default OS Boot Order between Windows 7 and Vista?

If you have recently installed Windows 7 beta on your Vista machine like me, then you may be wondering what is the easy way to change the boot order between Windows 7 and Vista without manually changing any settings under boot.ini or any other file.

Here is a way to change the default OS to boot using the Advanced System Properties under Vista.

So how to change the default OS to boot from Windows 7 to Vista?

Go to 

Control Panel Home (Start -> Control Panel) -> System and Maintenance -> System.

On the left side pane, under the Tasks, Click Advanced System Settings.

Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

Under System startup, you can change the Default operating system between Windows 7 and Vista. If you have installed any other OS, you can change between those settings as well.

Click OK and the next time you start your computer, the boot order should have changed. You can also change the time duration for which it shows to change the booting OS.

In System Preferences > Startup Disk you should be able to choose Mac OS X as the default system in which you wish to boot.

The iPhone battery meter is so imprecise as to be useless. But in iPhone 3, you can show the percentage charge. To show the battery percentage, go to Settings>General>Usage and turn on Battery Percentage.





Variable Speed Scrubbing
I listen to a lot of radio shows on the iPhone from my hometown, London.
These shows can be a couple of hours long so I often “scrub” through to the best parts.
On the iPod with a scroll wheel, this was easy.
But on the iPhone, it became an ordeal — the song bar was notoriously fiddly and the track would often jump when you pulled your finger off.
But with the 3.0 software, scrubbing can now done be at different speeds.
When you hit the song bar it starts glowing, allowing you to scrub through the track from left to right. But the further you drag your finger vertically *down*, toward the “Home” button, the finer you can control the scrolling speed: it goes from “high speed” to “half speed,” “quarter speed,” and finally “fine scrubbing.” No more jumping tracks.





Double Tap “Home” To Launch Camera
I’m using the camera a lot on the new iPhone 3GS. Instead of going to the Home Screen and hunting for the Camera icon, the camera can be launched with a double tap of the Home button.
Go to Settings>General>Home and select “Camera.”
(Alternatively, you can map the Home button double-tap to iPod, Phone Favorites, Search or Home).





Easy Email Suffixes
When typing out an email address in the “To” field, there’s a shortcut for adding .net .edu .org .com suffixes. Press and hold the “.” key (the period key) and the suffix options pop up.





Sound Check
This is really an Easter Egg, not a hidden feature, but delightful nonetheless. The new Voice Memos app shows the image of a microphone. Tap the image of the mic, and the VU meter jumps as if you were tapping a real microphone.
